Getting the pope involed was the wrong thing to do; his opinion about liturgical uniformity as a means to unity is irrelevant to other jurisdictions, and the Syro-Malabar Christians should have settled this on their own, either with a compromise or with ecclesial sanction, if they couldn't get unanimity on ad orientem worship.
