Did you read his full piece "A Council Can Also Make Mistakes;" it is very good. Perhaps his book is good, too, but it's probably not readily available in the U.S. yet.
Yes, I found it to be rather "moderate," and he carefully distinguishes his work as a historian from that of a theologian or a bishop. I know many have recommended his book. I have thought of getting Msgr. Gherardini's book in English.
